What is a Structured Settlement?
It is a tax-free fixed annuity available for the benefit of individuals, and their families, involved in personal physical injury disputes and workers compensation claims as defined under IRC Section 104(a)(1) and (2).
How does a Structured Settlement Work?
1. Defendant and Claimant reach a settlement which includes the Claimant receiving multiple payments in the future.
2. Defendant transfers the obligation to make these payments to John Hancock Assignment Company (JHAC) in exchange for valuable consideration (as required by law).
3. JHAC purchases an annuity from John Hancock¹ to fund the obligation to make the payments (payments are guaranteed by John Hancock¹).
4. John Hancock¹ makes the benefit payments to the Claimant.

John Hancock¹ began offering Structured Settlement Annuities in 1999 with the goal of becoming a prominent carrier in
this dynamic marketplace. Since then we have established a strong market share with current assets under management exceeding $1 Billion (as of 6/30/2006).
[Compliance Question: Is the $1 billion excess figure soley from JHLICO or a part of the entire JHFS enterprise? Ensure that this figure is properly stated for
JHLICO so that this does not appear as misleading to the public.]
Our success can be credited to several factors. Not only has John Hancock¹ earned excellent financial strength and claims paying
